Emotional Intelligence a set of skills that are vital to good leadership. On this episode, part two of a series on emotional intelligence, I want to provide an understanding of two of the 15 emotional intelligence skills that I believe are most important for leaders. These two are emotional self-awareness and emotional expression. But rather than jumping right into definitions and tips I’m going to begin by telling you a story from my own career – the situation that made me aware of my own need for growth in the area of emotional awareness and expression. It illustrates the negative consequences of being emotionally unaware and also illustrates the good news – all of us can grow in these vital skills.

Emotional intelligence enables you to rightly handle situations in your everyday career.

Every successful business is successful in part because of the way the relationships within the business function, and those healthy relationship dynamics begin with the leader. It is vital that leaders have the emotional intelligence skills that enable them to lead teams, enable collaboration, and build consensus and enthusiasm. I’ve had to learn some of those skills the hard way myself. That’s why I feel strongly about the topics I’m covering on this episode. You’ll hear why leaders who are skilled in emotional self-awareness and emotional expression have a distinct advantage and are more likely to build relationships and companies that thrive. In addition, you’ll learn some practical ways you can increase your skill in both those areas. Please, take the time to listen.

If you want to be seen as a respected leader you have to be aware of how you come across.

Every leader desires to be respected because of what they bring to the table. But it doesn’t happen automatically. The way you interact with people is the main thing that determines the level of respect team members, vendors, and clients have for you. Those interactions happen on an emotional level, and it’s your job as a leader to become aware of how you come across in those interactions. What are you communicating through your tone of voice and body language? Studies show those things matter more than what you actually say. Making deliberate, wise adjustments in those areas will help you gain the respect you seek. You can hear my tips for how to grow in your ability to lead well on an emotional level, on this episode of The Success Talk Show.

Emotional self-awareness and emotional expression form the basis of your reputation.

The way people see you, the way people talk about you in the marketplace is directly related to the way YOU interact with the people you come in contact with daily. Are you gruff and demanding? Do you really listen or are you distracted by other things? Are you open to suggestions and eager to hear and support the ideas of others? These are a few examples of how people might perceive you – and what determines their perception is how you emotionally express yourself in your daily interactions. On this episode, I’m sharing what I’ve learned about the importance of emotional self-awareness and the role it plays in how you express what you feel as a leader. The things you learn could change the trajectory of your career.

The first step to emotional self-awareness is admitting where you struggle.

In order to grow in emotional self-awareness, you need to make a conscious effort to observe yourself. How do you feel during intense situations? How do you feel as people deliver the unsettling or unexpected news? The things you notice may be uncomfortable to admit, but admitting them is exactly what you must do. Once you see and admit the struggles you have in the area of emotional intelligence, you’ll be able to build a plan to effectively address them. I’ve got 5 very practical tips for you about how you can do that on this episode, so I hope you’ll listen.
